I must admit, I found the entire concept gross as hell when my castmate first explained it to me.

But tonight I'm breathing freely through both nostrils better than I have in weeks.

It took a little getting used to, of course... but me, I'm now a believer.

Interesting procedure but, it does make sense.
Might be worth checking into this.

It is. I'm a proponent. I'd been using Afrin to clear my nose on nights before shows, but once the Afrin wears off, the congestion comes back with a vengeance, and you can only use Afrin three nights in a row without taking a break.

Me, I had no idea salt water – or anything, for that matter – could go in one nostril and come out the other (my biology teacher would be so proud), but this little procedure leaves you feeling clear, refreshed, and breathing normally for hours. Plus, the hippie in me loves that it's all-natural. ;)

Interesting. I didn't know they made a device for that. I've been snorting salt water for years as part of my "home remedy" regimin for colds. Normally, I'd just mix up a glass of salt water, like you'd do if you were going to gargle. Closing off one nostril, I'd place the glass so that I could submerge the other nostril in the saline, and slowly inhale, stopping when I could feel the liquid beginning to trickle down the back of my throat. Again, key word, slowly. The object is to bathe the nasal passages in salt water, not the lungs.

I do this, because colds can only exist in the nasal cavity, right under the eyes. Anywhere else in the body, the body kills them quickly, but they can (and do) colonize the sinuses and (particularly) the nasal cavity. This is why those Zicam swabs and nasal sprays work. They put zinc gluconate up in your sinuses and nasal cavity, which makes it difficult for germs to grow. Now me, like every "good 'Merican," I prefer slaughter over containment. Germs find zinc to be unsettling, but salt is down right unfriendly.

I thought at first this had something to do with dime bags. http://www.tombsofkobol.com/forums/images/icons/icon9.gif

My next home WILL have radiant floor heating, which will hopefully improve air quality.

As for the Neti Pot thingy, I may have to break down and try it out.

Squonk, my last home had radiant floor heat, and that's one of the things I've missed most this winter. It DOES improve air quality! I had to dust, like, once a year. ;) Well, maybe a little more than that...

As for the Neti Pot, I'm hear to preach the gospel. Damn thing works. I understand, Necron, that you can get a zinc solution to mix with the salt water in the Neti Pot. I may well give that a try.

I tried one of those neti pots once and it did nothing for me. When winter comes my sinuses usually go to pieces. In the last three months since putting the critter in daycare, our family has shared 3 colds/sinus infections among other fun viral issues.

I'm not supposed to do Afrin due to blood pressure issues, but the doc said that if I'm truly miserable that I might want to go ahead and use it before bed anyways.

Consistent use of Afrin causes the nasal membranes to want to be swelled in their normal state. Nasty.

Definitely stay away from Afrin or any brand nosespray. I was addicted to nosespray for about 20 years, and the damage it inflicts on your sinuses is similar to that of cocaine. I used to have terrible allergies and was prone to sinus infections, and the only way I could sleep at night was to use Afrin. What they don't tell you is that use of Afrin causes the sinus membranes to swell even more when it wears off, so you get to the point where you can't breath through your nose at all if you don't continue using it, not to mention the pounding sinus pressure headache that kicks in if you don't use more. I'll never forget one doctor asking me how long I've been using cocaine, and when I told him it was Afrin, he wasn't at all surprised. He said "Oh, you're another Afrin addict".

Just say "No" to Afrin.:)

Haven't even been tempted to use it since I got my Neti Pot. I've always used the decongestants in cold remedies like DayQuil and Alka Selzer Plus Cold/Flu... it was only recently that I gave Afrin a try... and while it works, when it wears off, the congestion comes back worse than before!

Now I know why!

Off topic, but every time in this thread someone has written the words "Neti Pot," my mind has interpreted that as Potty Net ... which, I'm sure, is something else entirely.
