Huh-hu-huuh ... he said, "Pole."
And on a related note, I had to go with a serious case of the Crabbe.

I voted for the 1979 Filmnation animated movie and TV series. Though the Buster Crabbe Serials would finish a close second for me with the movie in third place.
As to the new show. I wouldn't even call it an adaptation. Its more like a deconstruction.

I would have to say the '80 movie first, because it was the most fun.
The Buster Crabbe serial second.
The cartoon third.
The new series a very distant fourth.

Ian -
I just purchased the DVD set for the Filmation version of Flash Gordon. I've only gotten through the first disk, but I've been enjoying it quite a bit. I only remember watching a small handful of episodes back in 1979, so it's all feeling new to me.
You mentioned an animated movie and I've seen one or two references to this, but I don't think that I've seen it. That was one thing about the first episode, it made me feel like I got dropped into the story after missing the first half hour of a movie or something.
Where have you seen this?

The animated movie is made up of so many episodes of the series.
I've seen it once, around 1980 or so, and i seem to recall the picture quality was better than in the TV episodes.
There are "Canadian" DVDs of it out there.

Petes hit the nail on the head here. I think the movie was basically made up of scenes from the first six episodes of the cartoon series. As to feeling like you were dropped right into it. I felt that too because Flash Dale and Zarkov never actually leave from earth for mongo. It seems to establish them right away as characters who have been working with each other for some time.
That said though there was a fair bit of drama in those cartoons which was pretty advanced for the day. Dale visably being somewhat jealious of Flash everytime he was in a clinch with another woman and such.

The movie came first and the episodes later used portions of it, repeatedly. Not all of it though, there was a major WWII subplot involving Hitler that was never seen again.

I think you forgot the animated Defenders of the Universe, with the Phantom.
Never mind, I just read the asterisk.

Thanks AO. I seemed to remember something about Hitler but I wasn't sure about it.

I did find some info about the Filmation FG TV movie. It was what was used to sell the series, but it wasn't broadcast on television until the series was over in 1983. It had a one-time prime time broadcast on NBC and it was never seen again.
The reason that it didn't appear with the DVD set is that the company that produced the series DVD doesn't have rights to the telefilm version.
I did find a 1-1/2 minute clip of the opening scene at YouTube. Just search for "Flash Gordon - The Greatest Adventure of All". The guy that posted it has a website with a list of stuff he has converted to DVD and this is one of those on his list. I emailed him to find out about getting it. I would like to see it myself.
I did a search for a Canadian Network version, but came up empty...

Buster Crabbe was actually my first exposure to Flash Gordon. You could see where George Lucas was inspired to make Star Wars. I'm with Buster Crabbe.
I don't make much time for the movie version, other than the Queen soundtrack.

That sucked almost as bad as the 1996 cartoon.

Same here. He was also my first exposure to Buck Rogers as well. Am sure Peter will tell you that we got the old movie serials played a lot on the BBC during the summer holidays back in the 1970's and early 1980's. They were usually on first thing in the morning at around 8am or there abouts.

I voted for the movie - mostly because I don't think I've ever seen the buster crabb ones, I vaguely remember the cartoon - and I doubt I'll get around to the new series. :D
Plus you did forget to add Flesh Gordon ;)

I'm just shocked and a little curious how they managed to get John Hoyt (the original doctor from the first pilot for Star Trek - later seen in the episode "The Cage") to be in a softcore porn?

Langolas -
You wanna know what? I just remembered that a friend gave me the DVD of Flesh Gordon as a gag birthday gift a few months ago. I had completely forgotten about it.
I'll have to sit down and give it a look next weekend just for a laugh.

Has it been reviewed on the site? I think it just falls under the broader Flash Gordon entry. You should write the review :D

Looks like Buster's still the man and only one person has absolutely no taste whatsoever.

As my ceramics instructor would say, "All people have taste, only for some it's all in their mouth."
