All it takes is someone entering your SSN when they are opening a new account in their or a false name.

Wish me luck wresting the information on the scumbag (or innocent typo-prone perpetrator) from Chex Systems (the deposit banking version of the credit reporting agencies). Idiots can't even tell you what's been done in your "number" or by whom or freaking where it's been done. Privacy, bah!

Julie -

Sometimes, it's not even intentional. Remember when I was on unemployment about 4 years ago? When I went to apply for unemployment, they already had someone registered in their system with a different name, but with my social security number. The funny thing was, they said that the burden of proof was on me, because they already had someone with that SSN registered. Proving I was who I was took no effort at all. In the end, someone had miskeyed the other person's SSN by one number and that's all it took. As I said, sometimes things happen, but the real issue is those that are supposed to verify that information, might not be doing a good job of it. A mistake is all it takes at times..

I hope you get things sorted.

That may be the case in my case too, it could be an innocent miskey/typo, all tied to one account. It's most frustrating that I cannot find out what exactly the person did or with whom they had the account(s) at this point.

It is awful that the burden of proof rests with the victim, even when the agencies know there is either error or fraud.
