With the advent of the ease of MP3 downloads on the internet, the RIAA is an unecessary entity. Why do they still exist?

They are an industry advocacy group, looking to get paid.

Stealing intellectual property is wrong, certainly.

But politically arranging what the founders, and most of the rest of the world intended to be "limited monopolies" to be practically permanent monopolies is also wrong.
