She's on tablets for now and we'll have to see how she goes. If the tablets don't work she'll have to have an operation.

I hope everything works out for her.

Pets are family. Period.

Peter -

She's very sweet looking. I adore cats - I don't currently have any, but my roomie has a 16-year old ginger tabby mix that has definitely become very attached to me.

I hope things work out well for your "child" - what's her name?

I pray that everything works out for her too. I've got two cats myself. I love animals.

She's a charmer, Peter. We had a cat with a thyroid issue and she lived a long and happy life.

Tell me - is the vet giving her feline medicine or human medicine?

She has lovely eyes and looks like a sweetie.

My family had a few cats with hyperthyroid. One had an operation for it. Other than the anaesthetic because our cat was getting up there in age, it wasn't really a problem and this cat persevered quite nicely for many years afterwards.

I hope everything works out for her and you.

It's feline medicine and her name's Misty by the way.

I hope that the tablets work and Misty gets better. Cats are definitely family.

Well, she's a cutie, Peter. I'd suggest introducing her to our cat Salem, but he's not much of a boy anymore.......

Our cat was given human medication. Apparently it's the same stuff as the feline, but the human medication is cheaper for some reason. Of course, she was hypo-thyroid (not hyper-), so it was a different medicine.

Keep us posted.

Mistie is very cute, thats for sure.. and I'm sure she knows how to trade on it (Nermel syndrome) Has that look in the eye of trust and calculating adoration that cats get when they like where they are & who they are with.

We had a pair of russians, one blue, one white and we lost the blue to cancer some years back. Still got the white, Alex, who trades entirely on blonde charm.. should have called him Starbuck!

Best of luck with the medication program. As someone said earlier.. pets are family.

Cheers,
Lara

Peter I hope things turn out OK for your cat.

A while back our family cat was ill. At first they thought it was hyperthyroid, but then it turned out to be diabetes. Unfortunately, we weren't economically able to treat her for this and had to have her put to sleep. But we did get another cat shortly after that.

I hope everything works out for the best, Peter. Both of my cats died within the last 2 years.

Peter,

She looks like a sweet one. Best wishes for successful treatment via the medicine. Anytime you can avoid surgery, it's a blessing.

We have 3 American shorthairs and I call them, collectively, "My Babies". I love them terribly and really go through some definite "hurtin'" when they're not well.

Keep us posted.

Are there any updates on Misty? When will you know whether the pills are working?

She's got 30 days worth, so I've got to take her back when they run out and we'll go from there.

DawgThe human medicine (for hypo) has been out for ages, available as a generic, available at different strengths and thus cheap.

We use human benadryl for our terrier's allergies sometimes.

Sorry to here about your kitty, Peter. She looks like a nice one and her name suits her.

Peter, just checking to see if you got the 30 day update on Misty yet. Hope all is going well.

Well, where shall I begin.

She's off the tablets she was first prescribed. After a while she stopped eating completely and was a sorry sight indeed.

I took her to the vets and it turned out she had a chest infection so she had a couple of antibiotic jabs and some pills and I was told to take her off the hyper-thyroid tablets while she was on the antibiotics.

She came off the antibiotics and I rung the vet up to see if she could go back on the hyper-thyroid treatment.

She could and she did, but within a day she'd stopped eating again.

I took her to the vets again.

This time she's on different hyper-thyroid tablets. She has to take two a day.

So far no problems (touching wood and crossing fingers).

At the moment she is sat on a matt outside the front door lazing around like only cats can do.

Ugh. I feel for you. Our kitty stopped eating back when I was first dating my wife and she dropped down to about 5 pounds. She was lethargic and wasting away. It broke our hearts and we were afraid we were going to lose her.

That was January 2003. She turned it around and eventhough she's diabetic now (and deaf and just plain wierd), she continues to thrive and pester us at 4:30 am.

I hope you have many more years with Misty. May she be licking your forehead and purring obnoxiously loudly at 4am in the distant future. :)

Eww! don't wish him kitty licks—those tongues scratch!

Peter I hope your cat does a complete turn around.

I'm very sad to say, that my cat Misty was put to sleep today.

Her kidneys had all but failed and there was nothing more that could be done.

She's buried in one of her favourite spots in the garden.

I'll miss her very much.

Sorry to hear this Peter. We had to have our own cat put to sleep this past spring, after the developed diabetes and began dropping weight rapidly. I know how attached people get to their pets. Taking the cat to be put to sleep was one of the hardest things I ever had to do.

Peter -

I'm very sorry to hear about Misty. I know about the kidney failure bit from personal experience - twice. I've heard it's fairly common in long lived felines, but it doesn't make you miss them any less. I'm sure that she was well loved and cared for.

I do love that pic - it does produce a smile just by looking at it. You should submit it to the "Icanhascheezburger.com" website. It's just begging for a caption and sharing with other cat lovers.
