His death came just two days after it was announced that he and rapper Kanye West had settled a federal lawsuit over the use of Knievel's trademarked image in a popular West music video.

He had a knack for outrageous yarns: "Made $60 million, spent 61. ...Lost $250,000 at blackjack once. ... Had $3 million in the bank, though."

He began his daredevil career in 1965 when he formed a troupe called Evel Knievel's Motorcycle Daredevils, a touring show in which he performed stunts such as riding through fire walls, jumping over live rattlesnakes and mountain lions and being towed at 200 mph behind dragster race cars.

In 1966 he began touring alone, barnstorming the West and doing everything from driving the trucks, erecting the ramps and promoting the shows. In the beginning he charged $500 for a jump over two cars parked between ramps.

He steadily increased the length of the jumps until, on New Year's Day 1968, he was nearly killed when he jumped 151 feet across the fountains in front of Caesar's Palace. He cleared the fountains but the crash landing put him in the hospital in a coma for a month.

His son, Robbie, successfully completed the same jump in April 1989.

RIP Evel.

My brother had the Evel Knievel toy from Ideal. The one where you revved this plastic red thing and rubber Evel would shoot off on his plastic motorcycle across the room.

Daredevil Evel Knievel Dies

The 1970s icon passed away in Florida on Friday at age 69 after being in failing health for years

By Joshua Rich

Legendary daredevil Evel Knievel died on Friday at age 69. The stunt icon — who jumped his motorcycle over canyons, stacks of cars, and the fountains at Caesars Palace — had reportedly been in failing health for years, suffering from diabetes, lung disease, and hepatitis C. Famous for his star-spangled jumpsuits and breathtaking feats, Knievel was a global pop-culture staple in the 1960s and 1970s thanks to the death-defying acts he performed in traveling shows and on a variety of TV series and specials. In 1977, he played himself in the fictional feature film Viva Knievel!, opposite an all-star roster including Gene Kelly, Red Buttons, and Frank Gifford. Unfortunately, though somewhat appropriately, the movie crashed at the box office.

Damn 69 hey. For some reason I always thought he was a little older.

I also remember a naeghber having the evil bike thing and he was envied by most kids in my naeghberhood.

Remember seeing a movie whish he starred in made back in the late 70's. Think it was called viva kenevil and it was a pretty good movie.

Also remember seeing the Biography movie which starred Jeff Bridges as his father in law a few years back which was a pretty good flick too.

He was probably the inspiration for 6MDM - the man who took a spill and kept on coming - no matter the cost!

Wow, like Dawg said, "The passing of another cultural icon". The name "Evel Knievel" will be forever linked as a descriptor to daredevil stunts.

I, too, am saddened to hear of his passing.

RIP, Mr Knievel. :(
