View Full Version : OT - Where did the The 7 of 9 Scandal Post go?

Yesterday I read here about about the Sex scandal with Jeri Ryan and her X - Later in the post I guess one of the Admins was thinking of deleting it. Now its gone, This was covered on CNN, and MSNBC, as well as on Hinemans rag,,,

So First off I wanted to say that I think this is a valid topic for discussion, 2nd that the original poster "tackled the subject" (pun intended) with considerable "zeal and enthusiam" (pun also intended)

If we are going to talk about the goings on of our favorite Stars and Characters, that should I think include their triumphs and their failures and Scandals.

I think its a safe bet to say at some point in the future - some other star is going to be involved in something similar, or worse - What if it's #6? or Katte Sackhoff, would that post be deleted as well? I hope not...

"Captains Log!!" thats made me laugh for 2 days straight..

While I understand this is not a democracy, I vote anyway.

Since she is a major scifi figure, being the most remembered person from the Star Trek - Voyager series I think the subject was fair game. It is also being covered by the national news on both radio and network TV. That being said there wasn't a whole lot to the story -- He said/She said. If the thread wasn't deleted I bet no one would be talking about it on cylon.org today.

Since I don't own the site however I respect the wishes of the owner and his (Sandy is a he?) admins. They could delete this thread and any others and I say "Thanks for giving us the freedom to talk about all the rest of the stuff on your site."

Thank you Sandy and crew!

As a frequent proponent of OT material, along with the occasional political commentary, I have literally three points to make on both the deleted thread and *this* thread.

-1- The domain, site, and board ultimately belongs Sandy (aka the Two Brained Cylon), who has final say, or has delegated specific mod privileges to individuals who act in his behalf, on what stays and what goes.

-2- IMHO, I think it is bad form to openly question administrative decisions in a thread or a poll (and no, this is NOT a suck up). That is what PMs, IMs, and snail mail are for. When Sandy openly asked about a topic (http://www.cylon.org/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=50) I had raised, I promptly answered in what I presumed was a respectful manner. In other words, the opinions about topic content was solicited. I didn't recall that happening on the Ryan thread.

-3- In the end, while I understand and appreciate RockitScience's enthusiasm and take on the whole thing, I would politely refer back to my prior two points.

*****

Having said all that, I continue to thank Sandy for putting together a board and in turn, a community of people who are passionate about things big and small in the genre world and the universe of ideas outside of it. Methinks the idea of a dedicated section to politics and pop culture outside of the CA's mission statement, may indeed have merit for further consideration.

Cheers,
Bryan

I am glad that it is gone. I saw it over at scifiwire.com and left it there. It looked like smut. How they could run the thing is beyond me.

I voted "yes", but I fully agree and support that this is Sandy's site and he should and can run it as he sees fit, no argument from me.

This site still has the widest free speech rules of any forum that I've visited. It's rare when a post gets deleted here!

Apparently the subject is still open for discussion, but the way the original poll and topic was handled was devoid of any good taste. I'm a big fan of freedom of speech, but having a poll as to which choice was your favorite "tosser" fantasies concerning a well known TV personality was just so way down there.....

I think that the topic should stay open for discussion, but as for the original poll - no thanks!

The mods and administration at CA handled it quite well to my mind.

The thing about the story that nags me is that the records were sealed to protect a child who is now nine. The press showing disregard for that and suing for release and the judge who released it despite the fact that divorce court always talks about the welfare of the child are all shameful opportunists who should slide under a gas truck and taste their own blood.

Living in Chicago this story is everywhere. It was amusing at first until I thought about the kid who has to go to school in fall and suffer fools.

To discuss this is valid. To tease about it and make a few jokes is fine. But there is a line and I believe the line may have been crossed in the prior thread.

Who knows who reads this board? We have an opportunity to be fans and enjoy each others comments. We also may serve as unwitting ambassadors to fandom. We all claim to not like stalkers and sickos who use the title of fandom to commit sick acts and threaten people. I have to say that upon reflection of the prior thread, it could be seen as a bad reflection on all of us.

I am still torn on the deletion. Part of me would have preferred it be locked with final commentary from a mod to serve as an exaple of when the line is crossed. the rules are simple, but there is always a line and it may not be clear to some when the line is crossed.

However, I have yet to find a board as well moderated and administered as this one is and I am not a mod so I will abide by the decision and not moan over it. I have nothing but respect for the mods and Sandy. Though the history is not readily available, I am sure we all remember how ugly things got over the mini and how much aggravation they had to deal with for no pay. What did they get out of it? They got the pleasure of keeping this board our favorite spot on the web and maintained its heart despite overwhealming odds and hurdles and weirdos.

Frankly, I so not think we ever properly thanked them for putting up with all of that and we must be mindful of the track record before we get goofy over one thread.

Cheers

The original poll/thread was deleted by myself.

The poster has been banned for not entering into the spirit of this board and causing disruption. I add that the poster, prestonp, has been monitored for some time.

If you want to debate the subject then debate it like the adults you're supposed to be and that doesn't include making lascivious comments and inferences that'd get you sued if anyone took exception to the posts that were in that thread.

Free speech comes with a price, being a member of this board comes with some responsibility too.

If anyone's got a problem with this they can PM or email me.

Two-Brain's money. Two-Brain's board. Two-Brain's call (via his approved moderators, in this case).

I'm cool with that. I appreciate the combination of free speech with human dignity this board exhibits. If I don't like it, I can go pay some bucks and start my own board.

This is how America OUGHT to be. I like it.

I've just returned from a short trip and found this. First, if you read the guide under the rules you'll find my statement:

Marry your free speech rights with personal responsibility and a dedication to act respectibly.

Obviously this wasn't followed. This is a Sci-Fi board. Debates about people's divorces or implications of their sex lives do not belong here.

If you don't like how the moderators manage the board, go somewhere else. If I don't like it, I'll remove them. The mods here do not act according to popular opinion and frankly debating their actions is a complete waste of everyone's time.

If any of this is unclear I can explain it again using shorter words.

My psychic abilities must be in synch with your thoughts - those "short words" are coming through loud and clear.... :D

I hope you enjoyed your brief trip!

First off Sandy, There's no need to attack my intelligence, On other issues we have been in complete agreement, and Infact it was your, kind comments, and invitation, from my posts on the Scifi channels BSG board that got me over here in the first place.

Second, I agree it's your board and you can do what you want, I was questioning it, Simply because, I think that the Jeri Ryan thing is a legit news story,,, And I thought the original poster of the news went about it in an entertaining way...

And over the last what, 10 months or so that I have been reading and posting messages here I have seen pretty much every subject imaginable discussed from BSG to other SciFi - To gay marriage, and politics, to terrorism, to discussions on relationship issues. So I was a little suprised that it was aparently deleted.

I thought he didn't, and once more there was hardly any discussion in the thread, just a lot of smutty comments (Darth Marley excepted, who pointed out the reality of the situation), disgust at the post and eventually lack of respect for the spirit of the board.

If you want to discuss the story discuss the story without sinking to the level of immature school boys.

Once again, this is a free speech board, and there have been all kinds of discussion here, but once again there are rules and if you break the rules there are consequences.

Whoa!

I take a day or two off to relax a bit and watch some Dark Angel(rented from Netflix) and then I come back to Preston being banned.

hmmm..... Guess I missed that thread.

Oh well! Ain't my board. Sandy and you mods can do as you wish.

Chat with you all later. I'm off to watch some more Dark Angel and the movie "Honey".

Ciao! :D

For the record, I voted NO.

My shared my thoughts regarding this "news" story in
something to discuss (http://www.cylon.org/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=213)

Glad it's gone.

On a final note to this, Jeri Ryan's husband quit the race for senate.

So I'm not the only one who found him intentionally antagonistic.

Preston has enaged in bait and switch for a while now.

His famous callout with a certain thin-skinned member of the previous incarnation of Cylon Alliance is one example of many. I'm not defending the latter's conduct during Preston's callout. ( This was a situation handled badly by both Preston and the other party. ) However, this incident highly colored my opinion of Preston, and I'm not likely to miss his presence here.

I didn't see that post but I have to agree that a topic like that doesn't belong on the board. I would also agree with the statement that any questions about a post being removed should be done by the Pm system, not on the open board.
