NBC goes all the way with "Chuck" and "Life"
By Kimberly Nordyke and Nellie Andreeva Tue Nov 27, 1:52 AM ET
LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - A geek-turned-spy and a cop who served time will continue to grace the small screen: "Chuck" and "Life" became the first freshman series to get full-season pickups at NBC.
The dramas follow ABC's "Dirty Sexy Money" as the only rookie series to get full-season pickups since the start of the writers' strike November 5.
"Life" has shut down production because of the strike, and while "Chuck" remains in production, it was unclear how many scripts the series had ready before the strike began. There's still no word on pickups for NBC's other freshman dramas, "Bionic Woman" and "Journeyman."
"'Chuck' and 'Life' stand out in a crowded TV landscape because they are smart, well-produced series with incredibly talented casts," said Ben Silverman, co-chairman of NBC Entertainment and Universal Media Studios. "Both shows are hitting their stride creatively, have developed loyal audiences and offer unlimited potential to grow throughout the season."
"Chuck" stars Zachary Levi as a computer geek who is catapulted into a new career as the government's most vital secret agent.
The series airs at 8 p.m. Mondays, where it's averaging 8.4 million total viewers and a 3.4 rating/9 share in 18-49. For the November sweep, "Chuck's" 3.1 rating in 18-39 was on par with "Deal or No Deal's" May sweep rating in the same time period.
"Life," which stars Damian Lewis as a police officer who returns to the force after having been falsely imprisoned, is averaging 8 million viewers and a 3.0/9 in 18-49 in its 10 p.m. Wednesday slot. "Life" held onto its entire 18-49 lead-in from "Bionic Woman" for the first time November 14.

Oddly enough these are 2 of the 3 shows I plan on watching during strike reruns.

The axe is about to fall on the fraying thread tethering BWINO to the NBC schedule.
Buh-bye.
As for Journeyman, it was good... just not quite good enough. Better, I think, as a 13-part mini-series than ongoing episodic television. A perfect candidate for employing the BBC model (i.e., Life on Mars), with short runs and a pre-determined beginning and end.

Which will lead to several more years of GINO. eick isn't going to remain unemployed. With BWINO's failure he's proven he can't play with the big kids so he'll go back to a backwater cable station that where he can keep an unpopular, low-rated, money hemorrhaging show on the air by repeatedly calling in favors.
Shame about Journeyman, but quality TV just doesn't stick around. It's always been the case.

Well, if the rumors are to be believed, the cast is none-too-pleased with their post-strike treatment by NBCU, and really... can 1.2 really be carried another couple of years?
No matter how Skiffy spins it, the GINO star is tarnished... not that it ever had any lustre to begin with... but, dude, it is SO over...

really... can 1.2 really be carried another couple of years?
That's the point. It shouldn't have been carried as long as it has. No other show in the history of television with such high production costs has been repeatedly renewed with such low ratings. There is no logic to be applied. Only the fact that eick can keep it on as long as he wants.

I don't think so. I think Eick is on thin ice as it is.
The thing that I think brought Eick to prominence is Hercules and Xena. I think his name was attached to those. He was also producer of 'The Invisible Man' when it ran on Sci-Fi, and that didn't do too well.
I think that the 'fourth season of GINO is strictly a 'face saving' gesture. Because so much critical praise and egos have been put behind it they want to make it look as much of a winner as possible. Even though it clearly isn't. But they can't keep it going forever.
They may try with Craptica, but the numbers will never be as they were starting out. They relied on name recognition for those.
There is no logic to be applied
They have been churning out episodes for reruns and DVD sales.
The cost is too high to keep making it after a certain number of episodes.

I don't think "Chuck" is THAT good. I'm mystified as to what the real story on "Journeyman" is. I have yet to catch a single episode of the new Bionic Woman, so I have no comment on it, along with "Life."

I couldn't agree with you more on that, Commander. If we are not going to get a full 26 episode season run, this would be the next best thing.
Maybe we could get MORE genre-related fare if the networks adopted the BBC model.

Yes. That would be episode number four. But they kept making it.

Bryan -
I've watched a couple of episodes of Chuck and it's got some kind of "under the radar" appeal to it. It's entertaning to watch and I'm probably going to make an effort to watch more of it as the weeks go by. On the other hand, my roomie has been taping Journeyman (it's on past her bedtime) and I've been watching an episode here and there. She's really hooked on the show, but for me, not so much. I just haven't latched on to it.
Up to this point, I've never watched any of Life, except for promos and I've completely given up on Bionic Woman as of a couple of weeks ago. I might give Life a go when it goes into reruns and see if it's worth my while.

I hated the pilot for Chuck and Journeyman. Chuck has improved, but it is just fluff.
Life is great, though I have missed a few, and need to record it on its rerun cycle.

Yikes. I feel sooooo stupid now. I've watched both, and like Lois not knowing that Clark Kent was Superman, I didn't realize that Bryan liked John Simm.
Okay, now I can shut up and sit down.

Thanks for the belly laugh..... I should start out every morning like that!
The funny thing is, I used that avatar on a UK board I signed up on recently. A couple of people asked me if I'd ever been told that I look a lot like John Simm! I told them the truth...

I thought about using one of my blog icons that actually features the real moi, but that would set a bad trend here at the Cylon Alliance. My mug has been seen before in these parts, and I don't think that it really adds anything useful to the dialog. :)

Well, when posing with well endowed Renn Fair wenches, it does add something to the experience.

Yay for Chuck!
It is mainly fluff, but fun none the less!
Same with Reaper, but I doubt it will survive. To bad... I loved the entertainment center setup in the storage room a few eps back!!!
I am hoping that they keep Journeyman around as it has been building into a series, IMO.

I'm glad these show have been given a full season pickup. I hope Journeyman, Heroes, and Bionic Woman get one as well. That'd be cool. :D

Good Lord, man.
There's something poetic about being in the right place at the right time.
