I've got a new favorite.

Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World - Storm Sequence.

Mind you, I first thought this was a bunch of CG water overlaid on actors in a stage mockup in a studio.

Watching the extras on the DVD, its composited from film shot by a crew flown by help to a ship that rounded Cape Horn during massive swells. The water you see rolling there was filmed by an on location crew (matted to match the shots but it was real stuff). This was combined with shots of the actors on a physical ship rocking on a massive in-water trailer that then was all enhanced by CG.

Stunning work and when I really took a hard stare at it, I think its probably the most impressive VFX sequence I've ever seen.

If you've not seen it for a while, pop in the DVD and took a good solid look at it. Amazing work all around.

That's a very underrated movie overall, Sandy. It calls us back to the "men's movies" of the 50s in many ways. No political correctness, no whiny snots for captains; it's simply a good quality movie.

The VFX are excellent indeed. And as you pointed out, the CG is an accentuation, not a dominant centerpiece.

And of course, it has big ships with big guns :D
