Lately I'm into old movie serials. I've been buying and watching them, mostly on DVD but also on video if that's all I can find.

I began with the 1943 serial "The Masked Marvel". I could only find copies on VHS, but it was unique in that the hero's identity was unknown until the very end of the serial.
The next one was "Batman", also from 1943. It had a lot of anti-semetic references in it since it was WW II, and even mentioned how wise the government was to lock up Orientals in this country at that time.

I'm currently watching "Batman and Robin", from 1949. Since the war was over it isn't into oriental bashing. It looks funny to see Batman and Robin riding in an ordinary car. In one chapter Vicki Vale notices that Batman and Robin are riding in Bruce Wayne's car. She asks Batman "Does Bruce Wayne know you're driving his car?" Batman answers, "Why, of course".

Next up are the Superman movie serials and the Adventures of Captain Marvel one.

I have seen the Masked Marvel, Superman, and Flash Gordon serials, but the batman ones sound very interesting.

I REALLY enjoyed the Captain Marvel ones.

I have The Phantom Empire (with Gene Autry) and Undersea Empire (I think it's that) with Atlantis I got in a two pack. Also have the 2nd Batman on DVD, and the first one on VHS.

I love these things. I need to find the old Flash Gordans and Buck Rogers ones for me and my son to watch.

I guess when I run through the Superman and Captain Marvel ones I'll move onto Flash Gordon and Buck Rogers.

I remember seeing the old Batman, Superman, and Captain Marvel serials in a pizza restaraunt in Virginia Beach (can't remember the name of the place..) when I was but a wee laddie (about 100 years ago) and they would play on a giant screen in the front of the main dining area. I remember thinking "WOW....Batman, SHAZAM, and Superman went THAT far back?". IIRC, wasn't the Superman movie serials the ones with an animated Superman every time the live action character was supposed to fly?

IIRC, also, didn't Captain Marvel actually carry a gun in those old SHAZAM serials?

Like I said....100 years ago. :D

I finished Batman and Robin.

I figured out who the Wizard was but they threw me a little towards the end. Still I was right. I think they "cheated" a little by pretending to kill my suspect a couple of chapters before the end.

Plenty of that stuff is public domain, and some of it can be had at archive.org.
