Internet is 30 years old today!

Top 10 web sites which champion the spirit of the internet

By James Stables on Thursday, November 22, 2007

Thirty years ago today, three computer networks were connected for the very first time allowing the birth of that little invention we call the internet.

I’m not one for nostalgia, so instead I just thought that in tribute I would list my five favourite web sites that I feel embody the spirit of the internet.

Please feel free to discuss my choices, and supply your own in the comments section. Enjoy.

Facebook – An obvious choice and I hate myself a little bit for choosing it, but this really is the internet incarnate. Facebook brings people together, communicate with each other and build releationships. It really deserves the praise heaped upon it.

Windows Live Hotmail – The original webmail service is still going and for good reason. It democratised email communication, bringing the service to people who didn’t have traditional ISP accounts at home.

Windows Live Messenger – Still one of the best messaging clients available and evolving with the times. It now allows you to message, email, telephone, video call and even SMS.

Last.fm – I was thinking about choosing the old file sharing services like Napster or Kazaa in the way they have changed the face of music, but this hasn’t been entirely for the better. Last.fm embodies the best of music discovery and it’s totally legal!

Blogger – Never has having your own voice on the internet been so easy for the masses.

eBay – Changing the way people shop and interact online, eBay has almost become shorthand for getting good deals, and money for unwanted tat.

Yahoo! Freecycle – While eBay embodies capitalist spirit, Freecycle takes it to a philanthropic level. Give your unwanted goods to someone who needs it.

e-Petitions – The government petitions web site has hosted some lively debates since its launch, and given a voice to people with a cause.

Wikipedia – Some call it the democratization of information, while others call it biased and unreliable. I believe Wikipedia is one of the most important resources created, what do you think?

Google – If the internet is about anything it’s about having access to millions of pages of information at your fingertips.
