I've been emailing with Sandy, and he mentioned that the word even in the official press releases wasn't getting carried by the media about the successes they've been having in Iraq. They've done a lot in breaking up networks, finding or having citizens lead them to insurgent weapons caches, and in general are seeing a lot of the Iraqi citizens wanting Al Queda out of Iraq to the point of turning them in. (he mentioned the Sunni/Shiitte nationalist conflict is a different situation—I'm thinking it's similar to getting the Hatfields and McCoys to intermarry, but I'm not sure about that).
I googled until I found the press release page for the multinational force in Iraq and Sandy's right: it's staggering the amount of headway that's being made. Just looking at the headlines on this page: http://www.mnf-iraq.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=category§ionid=1&id=4&Itemid=128
and counting the numbers of times it talks about finding weapons, interrupting networks, detaining insurgents on that one page (covers the last week or 2) it's amazing. Hoo-rah to the coalition soldiers and the Iraq security forces & the Iraqis that are helping them.
