Tweaked Star Trek Shines in New HD DVD Set

Star Trek finally made it to the 21st century. A new hybrid HD DVD/DVD box set, released Tuesday, delivers the original series' first-season shows, digitally remastered and looking better than ever before.

The exterior space shots in Star Trek: The Original Series -- revamped using today's CGI techniques -- now show planets and starships that look more like NASA's finest imagery than the '60s-era special effects that were included when the show first aired. (See an example of the updated and original Enterprise models as seen in "Arena.")

The overall look of the episodes is richer as well: The original film negatives were digitally scanned, then painstakingly touched up to boost the contrast and eliminate scratches, tears and other imperfections. The end result is a Trek that's delicately tweaked without ruining the nostalgic pull the series has on long-time fans.

Even the music has been souped up, with the original score rerecorded by a small orchestra. William Shatner's original "Space ... the final frontier" voiceover has been remastered and dropped atop a faithful new rendition of Alexander Courage's theme music.

Aside from the wholesale digital remastering, the team responsible for updating Star Trek took tiny liberties that ultimately make the groundbreaking show even more entertaining. When the project was first announced, some purist Trekkies feared the Trek tweakers might botch the job, ruining a fan favorite in the process. But, as is evident from the interviews included in the featurette Spacelift: Transporting Trek Into the 21st Century, which is included in the 10-disc box set, this was a labor of love.

For instance, the Gorn captain that Kirk fights in "Arena" -- you remember, the man-size lizard with the silvery insect eyes -- blinks in the remastered version. It's a subtle effect, but it works to breathe new life into the monster without ruining the classic look of the costume.

A CGI city in the distance here, a new bomb bay in the Enterprise there, and the shows become ever so slightly better. There's still plenty of the corny dialogue, stiff acting, cheesy monsters and hippie-inspired grooviness that earned Star Trek a special place in the hearts of sci-fi-loving baby boomers. But now there's an extra dollop of eye candy, ladled lovingly onto the shows by artists with a deep respect for Trek's origins.

WIRED: Original Star Trek in all its glory and then some; cool extras like Spacelift and Billy Blackburn's Treasure Chest featurettes and much more.

TIRED: Hybrid HD DVD/DVD disks look mighty plain; steep price, especially if you already own previous DVD versions.

Price: $195 list, $136 street

Agreed. I'll buy the Blu-Ray set in two years.

You think that is going to happen? Personally, I hope it does.

Trek is almost as bad as Lucas for rereleasing sets. This of course is different as it has changed FX though. If it's 135 for all 3 seasons I might pick it up - but if it's just for season 1 - well I'll live without.

Star Trek has always been the most overpriced of TV boxed sets. I paid slightly over $100 for the original DVD sets (and I was actually happy with myself for resisting the two episode per disc release they did prior.) I am very interested in seeing some of the HD features on this set but yeah, I'll be passing on it for now. Fool me once...

I actually started, back in the early 90's, to collect all 78 episodes on VHS. Thankfully, I was perpetually broke, and only ended up with about 5 eps.

I also resisted the temptation to purchase the two-eps per DVD set, as well as the most recent complete series DVD release.

I am interested in owning the remaster series in Hi-Def (my reward for waiting), but I don't yet own an HDTV, nor am I interested in purchasing a Hi-Def player until the market and the technology shake out a little bit more.

I expect to have both within two years, and I expect the price of this set to have dropped by half by then.

I've been recording the stuff off of TV, and compressing it to XviD. I can wait a very long time and buy a "Complete Trek" remastered for 3D-HD on an optical cartridge in a few years.

What? It's only $600 for the series.

Seriously though, Paramount have always been gougers with DVD pricing.

As for this "shining?" Sure; it shines like a fresh turd if you've actually see the "remaster" effects. From the image at the site, they still didn't fix their peppermint candy bussard collectors.

The one thing about the pricing of the Trek DVD sets is that they stayed near the 100 dollar mark for quite some time. It wasn't until during the past year or so, they got knocked down to 50 bucks per season, which is much more reasonable.

CBS/Paramount Home Video really needs to get a clue when it comes to pricing DVDs to be sold, not to collect dust on the shelf until the price drops.

Still too expensive for me... plus I don't have HD yet, anyway.

Yeah, they cut the price in half once they knew they'd be releasing the HD sets. But that doesn't help us poor slobs who bought them new. I kind of expected there to be a coupon or something given out at the Menagerie screenings last week but I guess I should have known better.

I bought my boxsets when the price was only $50 apiece. What a bargain! 8)

As I have had an HDTV in the bedroom for over a year now, I can tell you that as tempting as it would be to go run out and get the new HD-DVDs out there, I am holding out for used copies, rental copies, and discounted copies.

I'm saving up for a new Sony Bravia, but until then, I'm content with what I've got.

A little OT

Found this over at TVShowsOnDVD.com.

Stargate SG-1 complete series, 54 disc, 10 seasons, $179.99.

That's $18.00 a season.

Enterprise is the most expensive at this time. The dvds are still near the hundred dollar range if not more.

Only the final season of Enterprise is worth even paying for, and even then, not $100. I might consider $35 IF the so-called "series finale" was left off the set.

Otherwise, $20 tops.

BTW, I don't consider the series finale canon. I consider it Star Trek: 1980.

Was it the death of Commander Tucker that sent you over the edge? Or was it the fact that Commander Troi didn't have "the gals" out in a more prominent holodeck situation?

The useless Tucker death... worse than Denise Crosby's oil-slick fate in TNG... was the tipping point, but the whole boring mess was so pointless, as was foisting TNG on top of it.

It was just plain bad. Bad, bad, bad. It was so bad that the parade of Star Trek ships at the end seemed schlocky rather than touching.

I feel icky every time I think about it.

At least Yar's death contextually made some sense. This was completely shock value.

I was so bloody mad when they killed off Trip in the last episode of Enterprise....! Was that really necessary? I mean, we all knew that the show was ending and it's not like the writers needed a "sacrifice" to seal the tomb or something.

It was so damn stupid - if I didn't want to see how the seried ended as a whole, I was tempted to stop watching right at that moment. I don't care if it was the last episode. It's like someone's given their notice to leave the company and then firing him on his last day. Morons...
