So far I'm hearing killer reviews of it.

I've seen it. I wouldn't call it "killer," but I was definitely entertained.
It's been a LOOOOONNNGGGG time since I read Beowulf, so I can't tell you how true the movie is to the "book," but I get the feeling it's definitely been Hollywoodized.
I didn't realize going in that it was a 3D "experience." The 3D wasn't "all that." While the 3D added "depth" to the scenes throughout the movie, stuff coming out of the screen was in short supply, and only once did I actually "duck" (though I must admit that was a damn cool moment).
Recommendation: matinee.

Do you have any age recommendations for kids?

Well, there's a naked semi-virtual Angelina Jolie. None of the "good" detail, but definitely suggestive. And Beowulf's naked semi-virtual buttocks are seen a couple of times.
Other than that, there's some violence... as you would expect. I wouldn't call it a "kids" movie, but I wouldn't feel bad about taking a child as young as, say, 10 to see it.

Back in the days of pre-PG-13 (according to what I've read of your account), this movie would've gotten a PG rating.
I'm up in the air as to whether or not I'm gonna rush to the big screen to catch this one....or just wait for the DVD.

The 3D was excellent, but everything else was just average.

I'm leaning toward seeing it in the theater but, I'm just not sure when.

I was going to go see it this weekend, but had too many projects going and the time got away from me. I'm glad that it's doing so well, though.
I'm going to avoid the 3D version, I remember the last film I saw with 3D segments and although it was well done, I found it a bit irritating at times putting the glasses on for some scenes and taking them off for the rest.
If I can make time, I'll go tomorrow, but I need to finish the projects I've got going in the bathroom I started over the weekend. If I can't squeeze it in, I can always go over the holiday weekend.

I must say that the Digital 3D was excellent, and I was sitting to the far left. There were none of the "double images" that I remember from years past. Another plus was the fact that the glasses were plastic-not paper. They were actually comfortable to wear. The ticket was an extra $2 for the 3D showing, but since the movie itself didn't turn out to be anything special, I'm glad I paid for the 3D experience.

PS Has anyone heard anything more about George Lucas' plans to re-release "A New Hope" in 3D?

It's apparently better if you haven't read Beowulf recently...or in any form more than the Cliff Notes!!
The writer read the classic, then decided he didn't like a lot of it and took liberties.
Re imagined was the verdict I got from friends in the States who know (and love) the text of teh original.

Haven't seen this new version.
I do have the version which was released last year with Gerard Butler in the heroe role. And found it to be fairly entertianing but in a not very fancy kind of way. No CGI or FX in it. Just very strong acting performances.

I actually really really enjoyed this movie. I got to see an advanced screening, and I thought the 3D would be a distraction, but to be honest it's done so well that except for a few sequences you almost forget it's in 3D.
It's been many moons since I've read the actual epic so I don't know how close or far they got to it. But I thought I remembered something about some kind of contest where Grendel said you can cut off my head only if I can cut off your head tomorrow. so Beowulf said, ok, and cut off Grendel's head which just grew back, and told Beowulf that he'd meet him tomorrow. Then Beowulf met him the next day to have his own head cut off, and I can't remember what happened next. though this may be some other epic that I only half remember.
Anyway, I loved the climax. I always bitch that one of the primary problems facing movies these days is the lack of a satisfactory climax. That many movies could be fixed if they had a decent climax, and in fact I think there should be climax writers. This movie had a really good climax.
