David Hasselhoff is in talks to appear on NBC's "Knight Rider," reprising his role as Michael Knight from the original series.

Additionally, "The Young & the Restless" co-star Deanna Russo has landed the female lead in the movie/backdoor pilot opposite fellow soap star Justin Bruening.

"Rider," from UMS and Dutch Oven Prods., is a sequel to the 1980s series that centers on Mike Tracer (Bruening), Michael Knight's son who never knew his dad.

Burned by his love for childhood best friend and one-time girlfriend Sarah Kamen (Russo), Mike is wasting away in Las Vegas when Sarah reappears and is willing to pay off Mike's gambling debt in exchange for help.

Sarah is the brilliant estranged daughter of KITT inventor Charles Kamen, who works as an assistant professor in the engineering department at Stanford. When she receives word from talking-car KITT (Knight Industries Three Thousand) that her father is missing, she and KITT set out to find and recruit Mike.

Is dad now an alcoholic eating cheeseburgers off the floor?

Not only would that be dark and gritty, I know where they can get some already-in-the-can footage!

Actually, I like the sound of that. I still think I liked it better when the new Knight Rider was unrelated, but vaguely aware of a predecessor. It would have been cool if they could have kept a Hoff appearance as a surprise... but then, they couldn't use it to boost the ratings, could they?

Still, though, I'm niggling here. On the surface, they are remaining true to the source material, and if they can just put together a quality team with enough respect for the original property, then this could be a Transformers style smash that's still broadcasting original episodes long after the BWINO Complete Series (2 DVD) box set has finished languishing on the unsold DVD shelves, and GINO discs are being bundled with FGINO sets for $5.99 in the Wal-Mart mega-bin.

I'd still like someone to ask Glen what this does to his planned movie.

What goes on with Glen? How did he let the network beat him to the punch? Or was he bluffing all along? I imagine he'll get some fatty checks from the series, just like he does with GINO.
